Did you know there is a granite Pyramid in Aberdeenshire?

Prince Albert’s Cairn, Balmoral Estate.

High up on a hill near the Queen’s Scottish holiday home, there is an amazing granite structure built in the 1860’s after the death of Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert.

We climbed the steep walk to the pyramid structure and spent some time there admiring the stunning views of faraway snow-capped mountains and heather moors. Definitely worth the hike! We were also intrigued about how the Victorian engineers and workers managed to create such a structure on top of a hill surrounded by native pine trees. There are actually 11 cairns dotted around the Balmoral Estate, all within reach of the nearby Crathie car park. Balmoral Castle can be seen from some of the cairns and memorial structures. It does make for a great day out from Aberdeen or even further afield. We met some people who had travelled up from Glasgow for the day. It is such a scenic part of the Cairngorms National Park.
